What the barbell bench press is actually for

Barbell bench press exercise demonstration
Barbell bench press, the version stored in the FitActive exercise list.

The bench press is the standard way to load the chest with a straight bar. The details that matter are the grip, the shoulder blades and the bar path.

FitActive · Barbell bench press · Chest, front shoulders, triceps

Lie on the bench with the feet on the floor and the eyes under the bar. Take a grip a little wider than the shoulders, pull the shoulder blades together, and lift the bar out so it sits over the chest. Lower it to the lower chest, then press it back up until the arms are straight. The bar should move slightly back toward the rack as it rises, not straight up from the belly.

Most ugly bench reps come from a loose upper back or a bounce off the chest. Set the shoulders once, before the first rep, and keep them there. If the wrists bend back hard, the grip is too wide or the bar is sitting too high in the hand. A spotter, or safeties, belongs there once the weight is more than you can rerack alone.

Record the bar weight and the reps, not a guess. The bench press only becomes a progress tool when last month’s set is still on the page. FitActive keeps that next to the exercise, so the next session starts from a number instead of a feeling.

What to watch

  • Feet stay planted. Do not walk them under the bench until the hips lift.
  • Shoulder blades pinched before the bar leaves the rack.
  • Touch the lower chest, then press up and slightly back.
