Pull-ups are hard because they show real strength

A pull-up is bodyweight pulled to a bar. There is nowhere to hide a weak back, which is exactly why the exercise is worth keeping.
FitActive · Pull-up · Back, biceps
Hang from the bar with the palms facing away and the arms straight. Pull the chest toward the bar by bending the elbows and bringing the shoulder blades down and together. Lower until the arms are straight again. A rep that starts from a half-hang, or ends with the chin barely clearing because the neck craned up, is a shorter exercise than the one in the gif.
If a full pull-up is not there yet, that is normal. A band, a partner hold, or a slow lowering from the top still trains the same muscles. Jumping and then dropping through the bottom does not. Own the reps you can finish, and add one when the set stops falling apart.
Write the variation in the note: band, bodyweight, or added weight. Five clean pull-ups next month should be comparable to five clean pull-ups today. That comparison is the reason the exercise lives in the workout log instead of only in a highlight video.
What to watch
- Start from a dead hang, shoulders active, not shrugged to the ears.
- Pull the elbows down, not just the chin up.
- Lower under control. Do not drop off the bar.
