Why the push-up still belongs in every workout

A push-up trains the chest, the front of the shoulders and the trunk at the same time. That is why it is still one of the first exercises in FitActive.
FitActive · Push-up · Chest, shoulders, core
The push-up survives because it asks for something simple and hard to fake: can you move your own body while keeping a straight line from head to heels? Hands a little wider than the shoulders, feet together, elbows bending so the chest travels toward the floor. If the hips sag or the head dives first, the set stopped being a push-up.
It is useful long after the first week. Beginners learn to brace. People who already bench still use push-ups as a warm-up, a finisher, or a day when the gym is closed. Raise the hands on a bench to make it easier. Slow the lowering, or add a pause at the bottom, when the regular version gets easy.
Log the sets. A number you can see next week is more useful than a vague memory of “I did some push-ups.” In FitActive this is one of the exercises a new workout starts with, because almost anyone can attempt it and then make the next session slightly stricter.
What to watch
- Hands under the shoulders, or just outside them.
- Squeeze the glutes so the lower back does not fold.
- Lower until the chest is close to the floor, then press the floor away.
